How AI Search Engines Decide Which Businesses to Name

6 min read · Updated October 25, 2026

AI search engines run their own web searches, read what they find, and tend to name businesses that show up across trusted sources: your website, listings like Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business and Yelp, recent reviews, and mentions in articles, videos and forums. Clear, consistent, current facts make you easier to pick. No one controls the final answer.

Updated October 2026. This guide sums up what the AI companies say about how their search works and what independent studies have measured. It's worth the effort: Seer Interactive found brands cited in Google's AI Overviews earned 35% more organic clicks than those that weren't, though it couldn't prove cause and effect (Seer Interactive).

Do AI engines look things up, or just "know" the answer?

For local questions, they mostly look things up. ChatGPT may search the web automatically when a question benefits from current information, and can use your approximate location to find local results (OpenAI). Claude invokes a search tool to ground its answers and may use a location inferred from your IP address for local requests (Anthropic). Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode may use "query fan-out," running several related searches across subtopics and data sources before answering (Google).

Each company also runs its own crawler, a bot that visits and reads web pages. OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI). Anthropic says blocking Claude-SearchBot prevents your content from being indexed for its search (Anthropic). Perplexity uses PerplexityBot to surface and link websites in its results (Perplexity). If the bot can't get in, the engine has fewer of your own words to work with.

Which sources do AI engines cite for businesses?

Several large studies have counted the links AI answers cite. They measured different things at different times, so read them as directions, not laws.

StudyWhat was measuredKey finding
Yext, Oct 20256.8 million citations from Gemini, OpenAI and Perplexity44% from brand websites, 42% from listings, 8% from reviews and social, 6% from news, forums and other; forums like Reddit about 2%
BrightLocal, Dec 2024800 local searches in ChatGPT across 20 industries and 20 US citiesBusiness websites 58% of sources, mentions in articles and guides 27%, directories 15%; no forum results
Ahrefs, Dec 202575,000 brands in ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI OverviewsYouTube mentions had the strongest correlation with AI visibility (about 0.74); branded web mentions were also strong (about 0.66 to 0.71)
Semrush, Nov 2025About 230,000 prompts in ChatGPT search, Google AI Mode and PerplexityReddit appeared in close to 60% of ChatGPT responses in early August 2025, then about 10% by mid-September
Ahrefs, Aug 202515,000 long-tail promptsOnly 12% of links cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot ranked in Google's top 10 for the same prompt

Two lessons stand out. First, sources you own or can claim, meaning your website and your listings, make up most citations in the Yext and BrightLocal data. Second, ranking well on Google doesn't automatically carry over: most AI citations in the Ahrefs test came from pages outside Google's top 10 for the same question.

Why do listings matter so much for local businesses?

Listings are where AI engines find the basic facts: name, category, address, phone, hours, photos and reviews. Yext found OpenAI leans heavily on third-party listings, and in healthcare, listings made up 52.6% of citations (Yext). Google says Business Profiles can help your products and services be visible in AI responses (Google), and that local ranking rests on relevance, distance and prominence, with no way to pay for a better spot (Google).

Claim and complete the big four:

  • Google Business Profile (business.google.com). Google lists keeping it up to date as a best practice for its AI features (Google).
  • Bing Places for Business (bing.com/forbusiness). It's free, and listings appear in Bing search and Bing Maps (Microsoft).
  • Apple Business (business.apple.com). Claim your Apple Maps location and control your logo, hours and details (Apple).
  • Yelp, plus your industry's main directory, such as a health, legal or home-services directory.

Do reviews and mentions really count?

For people, clearly. In BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey, 97% read reviews for local businesses, 74% only care about reviews from the last three months, and 89% expect owners to respond (BrightLocal). Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking (Google).

For AI, the signal is indirect but consistent. Reviews and social content were 8% of citations overall in Yext's data, and 13.3% for food service, the highest of any industry (Yext). Ahrefs found branded web mentions correlated 0.664 with visibility in Google's AI Overviews, far more than backlinks at 0.218, while warning that correlation isn't causation (Ahrefs).

Reddit and YouTube deserve a calm look. They're heavily cited in some studies, but Reddit's share swung from about 60% to about 10% of ChatGPT responses in roughly six weeks (Semrush), and forums were only about 2% of citations in Yext's data. A genuine customer video or a helpful answer in a local forum can help. Fake posts aren't worth it: Google's own guide lists "pursuing inauthentic mentions" among tactics to ignore (Google).

What on my own website helps AI pick me?

Make your facts easy to lift out and hard to misread:

  • Say it plainly, near the top. Microsoft's Bing guidelines advise stating facts directly, using consistent names and putting essential information near the top of the page (Search Engine Journal).
  • Use structure. Microsoft says clear headings, tables and FAQ sections help surface key information (Bing).
  • Use specifics. The GEO research paper found that adding statistics and quotations raised visibility in AI-generated answers, by up to about 40% in its tests (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024).
  • Label it. Schema.org LocalBusiness markup states your name, address, phone and hours in a machine-readable way (Schema.org). Google asks that it match the visible text (Google).

Does freshness matter?

Yes, though it's one factor among many. Ahrefs analyzed about 17 million citations and found AI assistants cited content that was 25.7% fresher on average than regular Google results. ChatGPT leaned newest, and Google's AI Overviews were the one exception (Ahrefs). Microsoft says freshness signals influence how quickly updates appear in search results and AI-generated answers (Bing). Keep hours, prices and services current, and show when each page was last updated.

Why can't anyone guarantee you'll be named?

Because the answers keep moving. SparkToro and Gumshoe ran 2,961 prompts through ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI and found under a 1-in-100 chance of getting the same brand list twice (SparkToro). Ahrefs found Google's AI Mode and AI Overviews cited the same URLs only 13.7% of the time for the same query (Ahrefs). And you can't buy your way in: OpenAI says ads in ChatGPT "do not influence the answers" (OpenAI). The realistic goal is to show up more often across many questions, not to "rank #1."

Quick answers

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing to find businesses?

OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers and points to Microsoft's privacy policy, and BrightLocal's tests found it mostly powered by Bing's index. Keeping both your Bing Places and Google Business Profile listings complete covers both.

Do I need to be on Reddit to get named by AI?

Not necessarily. Reddit's share of ChatGPT responses swung from about 60% to about 10% in 2025, and forums were about 2% of citations in Yext's study. For most local businesses, your website, listings and genuine reviews come first.

Can I pay to be named in AI answers?

Not in Google's local results, where Google says there's no way to pay for a better ranking. OpenAI says ads in ChatGPT are separate, clearly labeled and don't influence its answers. What you can control is how complete, consistent and current your facts are.

How often do AI answers change?

Constantly. In SparkToro's 2026 study, the same prompt returned the same brand list less than once in 100 runs. Measure the share of runs where you're named across many questions, checked monthly, rather than one answer on one day.
