The AI-Ready Checklist for Local Businesses
An AI-ready local business lets AI search bots into its website, claims its Google, Bing, Apple and Yelp listings, uses the same name, address and phone everywhere, states clear facts at the top of its homepage, labels them with schema.org markup, answers common questions, shows when pages were updated and keeps earning fresh reviews. Use the 15-item checklist below.

Updated October 2026. Work through it in order. Items 1 to 7 are the foundation, and most of them take minutes, not days.
What's on the AI-ready checklist?
| # | Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Your robots.txt lets AI search bots in: OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Bingbot and Googlebot | Sites that block OAI-SearchBot aren't shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI). Blocking Claude-SearchBot stops Claude indexing you for search (Anthropic). PerplexityBot surfaces and links sites in Perplexity (Perplexity). Bingbot is Bing's crawler (Bing), and Googlebot covers Google Search and all its features (Google). |
| 2 | Your host or firewall isn't blocking those bots | Google advises allowing crawling in robots.txt "and by any CDN or hosting infrastructure" (Google). Cloudflare changed its default in July 2025 to block AI crawlers unless they pay (Cloudflare), so check your settings. |
| 3 | Google Business Profile claimed, verified and complete | Verified businesses are more likely to show up, and complete info helps local ranking (Google). Google says Business Profiles can help you be visible in AI responses (Google). |
| 4 | Bing Places for Business claimed at bing.com/forbusiness | It's free, and listings appear in Bing search and Bing Maps (Microsoft). |
| 5 | Apple Business claimed at business.apple.com | Claim your Apple Maps location and control your logo, hours and details (Apple). Apple Maps nearly doubled as a review source, used by 27% of consumers in 2026 versus 14% in 2025 (BrightLocal). |
| 6 | Yelp page claimed, plus your industry's main directory | Listings were 42% of AI citations in Yext's study, and 52.6% in healthcare (Yext). |
| 7 | Same name, address and phone everywhere | Google warns that inaccurate info can keep your profile out of relevant local searches (Google). BrightLocal advises keeping your details accurate across sites (BrightLocal). |
| 8 | An answer-first homepage | Bing's guidelines advise stating facts directly and putting essential information near the top (Search Engine Journal). |
| 9 | Key facts written as real text, not only in images or PDFs | Google advises making important content available in textual form (Google). |
| 10 | Schema.org LocalBusiness markup that matches the page | It labels your hours, address and phone in a standard format (Google). It must match the visible text (Google). |
| 11 | An FAQ that answers real customer questions | Microsoft says clear headings, tables and FAQ sections help surface key information (Bing). |
| 12 | A visible "last updated" date, an accurate sitemap and IndexNow pings | AI assistants cite fresher content than regular search results on average (Ahrefs). IndexNow tells Bing and others when a page changes (IndexNow.org). |
| 13 | Fresh reviews, with replies | 74% of consumers only care about reviews from the last three months, and 89% expect owners to respond (BrightLocal). |
| 14 | Mentions beyond your own site: local press, associations, YouTube | YouTube and web mentions had the strongest correlation with AI visibility in a 75,000-brand study, though correlation isn't causation (Ahrefs). |
| 15 | A monthly check of what AI actually says | Answers vary from run to run (SparkToro). ChatGPT tags its referral visits with utm_source=chatgpt.com (OpenAI). |
How do I check my robots.txt?
Type yoursite.com/robots.txt into a browser. If you see a line like User-agent: OAI-SearchBot followed by Disallow: /, that bot is blocked. A simple file that lets every crawler in looks like this:
User-agent: *
Allow: /
Sitemap: https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml
OpenAI and Perplexity each say their bot settings work independently and that changes can take up to about 24 hours to apply (OpenAI, Perplexity). Blocking AI training is a separate choice. You can block OpenAI's GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot (OpenAI), and Google says its Google-Extended setting doesn't affect inclusion in Google Search (Google).
What does an answer-first homepage look like?
Your first paragraph should answer what you do, where, for whom and how to reach you, in about 50 words. For example:
"Bright Path Roofing repairs and replaces shingle, tile and metal roofs in Boca Raton, Delray Beach and Boynton Beach, Florida. Family-owned, licensed and insured. Free written estimates within 48 hours. Call (561) 555-0142, Monday to Saturday, 7am to 6pm."
Then use exactly the same business name, address and phone in your footer, your schema markup and every listing. Small differences, like "Suite 4" on one site and "#4" on another, are worth cleaning up.
Is schema markup still worth adding?
Yes, with honest expectations. Google says structured data isn't required for its generative AI search, and there's no special schema for it (Google). But LocalBusiness markup tells Google your hours and departments in a standard format, and Google recommends using the most specific type possible, such as Restaurant or DaySpa (Google). The schema.org vocabulary also includes broader types like HomeAndConstructionBusiness and HealthAndBeautyBusiness (Schema.org). Only mark up facts that are visible on the page.
Does an FAQ still help now that Google dropped FAQ rich results?
Google stopped showing FAQ rich results, the expandable questions under a search listing, in 2026 (Google). The page itself still earns its keep. Microsoft says FAQ sections help surface key information for AI answers (Bing), and customers read them. Write 5 to 10 questions people really ask, such as price ranges, parking, insurance, booking and service area, and answer each in two or three sentences.
How often should I review this checklist?
Review items 12 to 15 monthly, and the whole list any time you change hours, prices, services or address. AI answers shift constantly: SparkToro found under a 1-in-100 chance of the same brand list repeating across runs (SparkToro), so trends over several months tell you more than any single check.
IndexToAI's free scan checks the website items on this list, numbers 1 and 8 to 12, and explains each fix in plain English. The listings and reviews are yours to claim and earn, and they matter just as much.
Quick answers
Which AI bots should my robots.txt allow?
For AI search visibility, allow OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), Claude-SearchBot (Claude), PerplexityBot (Perplexity), Bingbot (Bing) and Googlebot (Google Search, including its AI features). Blocking training bots such as GPTBot is a separate choice.
Do I need all four listings: Google, Bing, Apple and Yelp?
Ideally, yes. Listings made up 42% of AI citations in Yext's study of 6.8 million citations, and different AI engines lean on different sources. Start with Google Business Profile and Bing Places, then Apple Business and Yelp.
Is schema.org markup required for AI search?
No. Google says structured data isn't required for its generative AI features. LocalBusiness markup is still worth adding because it states your name, address, phone and hours in a standard, machine-readable format, as long as it matches what's visible on the page.
How often should I update my website for AI?
Whenever your facts change, and review it at least monthly. An Ahrefs study of about 17 million citations found AI assistants tend to cite fresher content than regular search results. Show a visible "last updated" date when you make real changes.
